ICANN Now Accepting New Domain Suffixes

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has recently approved a measure that will allow entities to apply for custom site domain suffixes or gTLD's.Domain suffixes refer to .com, .org, .net, etc. With the approval, entities will now be allowed to apply for almost any name to use as a domain suffix such as .pkr or .bingo etc. This will be useful in a global effort to increase the amount of namespaces available for businesses and blogs in the finite world of domain names.The official statement on the website, President and CEO of ICANN Rod Beckstrom said:

“ICANN has opened the Internet’s naming system to unleash the global human imagination. Today’s decision respects the rights of groups to create new Top Level Domains in any language or script. We hope this allows the domain name system to better serve all of mankind.”

Registering the domain suffix will require an application fee that of $185,000. Having such a high price is rightly justified too as by reviewing applications for domain suffixes will require ICANN to conduct an extensive process. By approving a domain suffix, the corporation must especially make sure that no copyright is infringment possibility.ICANN says the applications for the custom domain suffixes will be accepted between January 12th and April 12th of next year.ICANN’s International Meeting is currently taking place in Singapore and will conclude on the 24th.
